Common tools of the craft

When looking in the magickal toolkit of the witch or at the altar that contains tools of the art, there are always tools that are used globally. A description of these magickal devices follows.

The Wand

The wand is used for directing and focusing energies.
Most wands are made of copper or wood and each have a unique purpose. A wand made of oak and tipped with a quartz crystal could be used in a spell for success in a job search or upward mobility in a current position. A wand made of apple and tippe with a pine cone could be used in a fertility ritual. A good study of the magickal properties of the materials that make up the wand will guide in the making or purchase of this tool.

The Athame

The athame , or "black-handled knife", is used for commanding power and activating energies. Most athames are double-sided anddull, as the blade is not used for cutting, and has a black handle. Many witches engrave magick symbols into the handle to enhance its properties. The athame and wand are often used interchangeably. This is acceptable, but do remember the magickal qualities of each and respect them as such. The athame is representative of the god aspect in many rituals.

The Pentacle

The pentacle is a flat disc with a pentagram engraved upon it. It is used for evoking the dieties and other entities as well as a talisman of protection within the magick circle. Based upon the design of the pentacle, its magickal properties will vary. It is a wooden disc with a design burnt into it and colored. The symbols are for the four elements or quarters, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, as well as symbols representing the Triple-goddess and the Horned-god.

The Chalice

The chalice is most often used in ceremony and dedication rituals.A symbol of the Goddess, it represents initiation and fertility. The style of the chalice is purely the taste of the witch. Most are of a wide-mouthed cup sitting on a long stemmed base, but some are ceramic based with magickal symbols inscribed on the cup and base.

The Cauldron

The cauldron is the symbol of the Goddess from which all things begin. Cauldrons vary in size but all are used for the same purpose. The cauldron is often the center of focus in spells and rituals, or for making healing oils and potions.

The Incense Burner and Incense

Incense is used for cleansing your sacred space. The smoke will rise and carry away any negative energies that reside in the circle. Incense is also used in spells and rituals to carry communications from the world of form to the ethereal realms. The incense varies on the purpose of the work. The incense burner is purely the taste of the witch.

The Broom

The broom is used for sweeping out all of the negative energies of the sacred space. It is also used in ritual as a gateway to the circle or used in a handfasting ceremony in "jumping the broom". Brooms are usually associated with a female witch, but is a global tool.
